The Ocean View community is the fastest growing area (Census Designated Place/CDP) in Hawaii County (124% growth), and is the largest community in Ka'u, the State's largest District. It has a high rate of person living at or under the poverty level; and one of the highest levels of unemployment in the state base, forcing residents to commute 90 miles round-trip to Kailua-Kona, or 170 miles round-trip to Hilo to find work. Public transportation is minimal, the Hele-On bus operating from Ocean View to Kona on Tuesdays and Saturdays only.

Interesting demographic about Ocean View from the 2000 Census:
4% of residences are atypical (boats, vans, busses, etc.); 17.5% lack plumbing facilities, and 12.6% lack kitchens; 17.1% lack phone service; 20.4% consists of a single room and another 10.6 have just two rooms. 23% of the age 21-64 population have a disability, as does 36.8% of the over 65 residents; 20.5% over age 18 are veteran; 24.2% over age 15 have never been married. 13.0% of families and 25.2% of individuals survived below poverty levels in 1999

The largest community in the district of Ka'u, Ocean View ranks in the State's top three neediest districts (State of Hawaii Department of Health 2001).

Contrary to common perception (retired mainland haoles) about Ocean View residents,
25.8 percent (562) indentify themselves as part Hawaiian or other Pacific Islanders, 56.7% as Caucasian Only 12.7% are age 65 or older, 26.3% are age 19 and younger; 61.0% are between 19 and 65 41.7% (923) were born in Hawaii.
